Pergola vs Patio Cover: Which Is Right for Your Backyard?

Homeowners usually come to us saying one of two things: “I want shade” or “I want an outdoor room.” Which structure you need depends on which of those you really mean. Pergolas and patio covers look like cousins, but they solve different problems. We build both across San Antonio and the Hill Country, so here is the straight comparison.

Option A

What a pergola does best

A pergola is an open structure: posts, beams, and a slatted or lattice top. It filters sunlight rather than blocking it, defines an outdoor space visually, and looks fantastic over a patio, a spa, or a garden path. Add a retractable shade or climbing plants and you can tune how much light comes through. If your goal is style, dappled shade, and an open-sky feel, the pergola wins. Browse examples on our Pergolas and Arbors page.

What a pergola does not do is keep the rain off. An open top means the furniture underneath lives outdoors in every sense.

Option B

What a patio cover does best

A patio cover has a solid roof. That single difference changes everything: full shade all day, dry furniture in a storm, and a space that works as a genuine extension of your house. Fans, lighting, TVs, and outdoor kitchens all live happily under a solid roof. In San Antonio heat, a covered patio can run noticeably cooler than open sun, especially with an insulated roof. See our Patio Covers gallery, including our newest line of insulated aluminum patio covers with woodgrain finishes that never need staining.

The tradeoff: a patio cover is a bigger structure with a real roof, so it is generally the larger investment of the two, and it changes the light coming into adjacent rooms more than an open pergola does.

Which one is right for you?

Choose a pergola if you want defined outdoor space, filtered light, and a garden feel, and you are fine moving cushions inside when weather turns. Choose a patio cover if you want to use the space daily through a Texas summer, keep furniture and a TV outside year-round, or build toward a full outdoor kitchen and living room. Plenty of our projects combine both: a covered core with an open pergola wing over the grill or spa.

Talk it through on your own patio

The fastest way to decide is a free in-home consultation. We look at your yard, sun angles, and roofline, then give you an itemized proposal for whichever direction fits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a pergola cheaper than a patio cover?

Usually yes for a comparable footprint, because there is no solid roof system. Materials and extras can narrow the gap.

Can a pergola block rain?

Not on its own. Some pergolas take a polycarbonate or retractable canopy top, but if rain protection is the goal, a solid patio cover is the honest answer.

Which is better for resale?

Both add usable outdoor living space. A well-built covered patio tends to function as extra living area, which buyers in San Antonio notice in summer.

Can you combine the two?

Yes, and it is one of our favorite builds: a solid cover over the seating and kitchen zone with an open pergola section beyond it.
